A PODCAST ON MEANING IN MEDICINE
THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE—FILLED WITH MOMENTS OF JOY, SUFFERING, GRACE, SORROW, AND HOPE—OFFERS A WINDOW INTO THE HUMAN CONDITION.
Though guiding patients through illness and healing seems intuitively meaningful, the busy nature of modern medicine can blind its own practitioners to the reasons they entered it in the first place. Join medical trainee Henry Bair and oncologist Tyler Johnson as they meet with doctors, patients, educators, leaders, and others in healthcare, to explore stories on finding and nourishing meaning in medicine. This podcast is for anyone striving for a deeper connection with their medical journey.
HENRY BAIR, MD, MBA
Henry Bair, creator and co-host of The Doctor’s Art, is a resident physician at Wills Eye Hospital/Jefferson Health. Born and raised in Taiwan and informed by his multicultural experiences, he views medicine as a vocation through which scientific and humanistic pursuits can be combined to heal people at the most profound levels.
At the Stanford University School of Medicine, Henry has developed curricula on reflective practice and strategies for compassionate communication with patients facing serious illnesses. He also directed courses on healthcare leadership and digital health. He has authored over 90 original research articles and essays on narrative medicine, healthcare delivery innovation, and health education, which have appeared in academic journals and mainstream media outlets.
With a clinical focus on ophthalmology, Henry is interested in the impact of visual impairment on quality of life and researches new surgical methods and medications for eye care. He has invented several diagnostic and surgical devices for treating ocular trauma and has worked on developing artificial intelligence-enabled diagnostic algorithms for retinal disorders.
He received a BS in Biochemistry and a BA in Medieval Studies from Rice University, and an MD/MBA from Stanford University. Outside of medicine, his interests include playing the cello, cooking, ballroom dancing, and learning languages.
TYLER JOHNSON, MD
Tyler Johnson, co-host of The Doctor’s Art, is a physician, author, educator, and humanitarian. At the Stanford University School of Medicine, he has held an appointment as a clinical assistant professor for six years. A medical oncologist, Tyler sees patients with all types of gastrointestinal malignancies and particularly focuses on patients with neuroendocrine tumors, colon cancer, and pancreas cancer.
Tyler also serves as a leader of the Stanford inpatient oncology services, including supervising the oncology housestaff service. He is responsible, in conjunction with other leaders, for multiple major improvements in the functioning of Stanford hospital.
Tyler views the practice of medicine largely as an educational endeavor. To that end, for many years he has taught medical students, residents, and fellows—including hosting them as temporary and longer-term apprentices in his oncology clinic and working with them on the inpatient housestaff oncology service. He has growing regional and national expertise as a leader and innovator in the education of oncology fellows and heads the Stanford oncology department’s curricular development. He also works as one of the principal faculty members of the Stanford Educators-4-CARE program.
Finally, Tyler is an author with a growing reputation for insightful analysis of the intersection of medicine, ethics, and spirituality. His writings have been featured by Religion News Service, the Salt Lake Tribune, BYU Studies, Dialogue, and The San Jose Mercury News, where he is a regular contributor.
